Danville Regional Medical Center to Serve as Sponsor for Kids and Pros Football Camp

DANVILLE, Va. (July 20, 2010) - Danville Regional Medical Center will sponsor a unique and high-energy football camp for kids in the Danville area for the second year.  Last year Danville Regional sponsored more than 100 campers. The Kids & Pros Youth Football camp will be Monday, July 26th - Friday, July 30th for campers ages 7 - 13 at Dan Daniel Park from 6 - 9 p.m.

The camp is unique in that it features character lessons led by football ‘pros’ along with football instruction that teaches campers fundamentals and position-specific techniques.

Buddy Curry, who is the founder of Kids & Pros, played inside linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons for eight seasons and was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1980. Buddy will conduct the camp, along with other football stars, including: Bobby Butler, Kenny Lewis, Ferrell Edmunds, Donald Smith, Ken Oxendine, Na Brown, Jeremy Phillips, Kenny Lewis, Jr. and several current Virginia Tech players.

“The camp combines teaching football skills and life principles that support the skill-based training the campers receive. We focus on respect, teamwork, perseverance, integrity, sportsmanship and the importance of having a good attitude, among others,” said Buddy Curry, Founder of Kids & Pros. “We are excited to return to Danville this summer. It is a great community with kids that are focused on having a great camp experience.”

The last night of the camp (July 30th) will feature a community event, where local residents are welcome to come at 5 p.m. to get the pros’ autographs and purchase concessions from the George Washington High School Booster Club. At 7 p.m. there will be a ‘Pros and Joes’ game, where the camp’s pros will play a football game with local ‘joes’ from the community.

This year’s line-up of ‘joes’ will be: John Thurman, Charles Fulcher, Darrell Aherron, Brian Bonar, Dan Veasey, Coleman Adams, Dr. Carl Winfield, Mike Mondul, Billy Chaney, Mike Newman and David Satterfield, among others. Danville Regional employees playing on behalf of Danville Regional include Andrew Cocowitch, Albert Klein, Scott Oakes and David Frances. The ‘joes’ are already starting to practice their football skills in preparation for the big game. Everyone is welcome to attend and cheer on the teams.

More than 100 kids have already signed up for this year’s camp. Space is limited but is still available. Participants can register online up to one week before the start of camp. Campers may also walk up on the first day of camp (July 26th) and sign up, but they must bring cash in order to register that day. For more information, visit http://www.kidsandpros.com.

Danville Regional is the leading medical center in the Dan River Region of Virginia and North Carolina, providing open heart surgery and advanced cancer treatment. Approximately 140 physicians are on the medical staff. The medical center employs approximately 1,400 people.
