We want to thank some folks for helping with what could have been a much more unpleasant experience for one of Chatham’s senior residents, Dr. Maria Choca. Late Saturday evening, Oct. 3, Dr. Choca fell and could not get up. She thought her hip had broken again. She used her Lifeguard alert button to summon help. Although her voice was too distressed to understand, they quickly responded and contacted us. They also contacted Jordan and Bob Kee, who were both on the scene shortly after we arrived. Jim called 911 and John Presley of our Chatham Rescue Squad was at Dr. Choca’s residence almost immediately. He was kind, efficient and thorough.
Shortly after his arrival, James Kittrell of Blairs Rescue Squad arrived to assist. They determined Maria should be taken to Danville Regional for evaluation. The emergency room staff at Danville Regional Medical was wonderful as well. They evaluated her almost as soon as she arrived. The ER physician that evening, Dr. Vincent Cheek, was kind, attentive and caring as were the rest of the staff.
Thank God Maria was only bruised but not broken. Dr. Cheek released her after being assured she would be all right at her home with caregivers. So many times, all we hear are negative comments about responders and medical staff. We think kudos are in order for all who helped Dr. Choca this past Saturday and Sunday.
